Today we had our first day in the fifth grade classroom! This is where we would be spending the next couple months, teaching and getting to know the students. Today was a getting to know you day, where we broke up into our groups and did an activity with groups of students. The students were also given a short pre-assessment which let us know what information they already knew about our topics that we would be teaching.

When we got to the classroom, the students were in lunch. This gave us time to set up our activities at the tables and be prepared for them to come back to class. My group was playing a board game that had a variety of questions. There were three colors on the board: red, green and blue, and the same color cards. If a student landed on a red space, they would answer a question about history. If they landed on blue, they would answer a question about themselves and if they landed on green then they would get the chance to ask any of the teachers a question. Overall, our game went pretty well. It was interesting to learn not only what they knew about history, but to get to know more things about themselves. It gave us an idea of each of their personalities, their friends and how they behave during such activities.

This was my first time teaching in a fifth grade classroom, with them being the oldest I will have taught so far. I was a little nervous, but after being in the classroom and interacting with the students, I began to get excited! I am apart of group 2, so we still have a couple weeks until it is our turn!
