Who Will Win this Election?

To announce our presidential candidates...!

Who would you vote for?

This lesson focused on the students working in groups to create their own campaign poster for their selected candidate. I got the pleasure of working with group 1 who was representing Thomas Jefferson!

The students were assigned roles within their groups to make sure that they all had a part when creating their posters. To do so, each group was given a group contract. On the contract stated which student had what job, and each member of the group had to sign it.

From there, each group was given two iPads and a folder. They used a QR code to go to a website about their candidate and had to fill out a sheet with information on them. Once the sheet was filled out, they moved onto creating their posters. They included the information they found, along with pictures. The best part: each group created a rap about their candidate.

While working with my group, I was able to see some students who were really interested and others who weren't. When we first began, two of the students were working hard looking up information to fill in, and the others didn't want anything to do with it. Even though it took some convincing, each of the students ended up putting in effort towards the final project.

When my group went up to present, I found myself smiling at not only how well they performed, but also because you could tell they were having fun!

After each group presented, the students were assigned to write a campaign speech to go along with their posters.

This lesson was successful in both teaching the students how to work better in groups and also to learn more about the important figures we learned about throughout the lessons we taught.

As this ended and we handed the students the prizes and medal they earned, I found myself sad to already be done teaching social studies. While all the work was intimidating, it was fun and the students were great to work with.
